My Personal India Travel Essentials

Writer's picture: Erika GillErika Gill

Updated: Nov 9, 2024

This is the personal list of items I bring for my travels in India. Use it to understand what is really necessary to bring, avoid forgetting important things, and serve as a helpful reminder for future trips... especially for me since I'm a bit forgetful ;) You can Get pretty much everything on this list in India but it may not be the same brands as I prefer, hence why I bring what I bring, cause, well, I'm picky!

Some have links and some don't, just click on each item to see what I've linked.

THE BEAUTY STUFF

Blow dryer - I use the Babyliss mini blow-dryer. Purchased on Amazon.

Hair flat iron - I bring my full size as I use this for a quick touch up on clothes too!

Hair appliance converter - I bought the Conair one that comes with multiple plugs

Heat-less curls wrap - You can sleep with this on and wake up to perfectly curled hair. also good when the power cuts happen and you cant do your hair. Did not use this!

Brush and comb - I think this is an obvious one! ;)

Hair serum - Purology color fanatic leave in conditioner, carry on size.

Shampoo - KeshKing, It's an Indian brand. I bring a small carry on bottle but I purchase a full size in India

Conditioner - I use Purology strength cure! But all their products are amazing. Highly recommend! I pack two, one carry on and one travel size bottle.

Moroccan oil - I use this with every wash and style. I bring the mini.

Chapstick - Okeef's is my one and only. I bring an abundance of these, I have about 5 going at once :D

Hair accessories - I bring a fabric headband, a shower cap, a long hair pin for low and high buns, mini plastic hair elastics and ouch less black hair elastics - I once had an issue finding these in India. Not into the colorful ones!

Deodorant - I generally use Dove everyday but while in India (or summer) I need something a bit heavier so I'll opt for Degree. This will be your personal preference. I use a solid so it doesn't count as a carry on liquid.

Pro-namel Toothpaste - "Gentle whitening" (VERY picky with this one) They do have it available on Amazon India for $15.50 Cad, but obviously would rather pay $6 and just bring it! I have sensitive teeth and this is the only one that actually whitens and doesn't make my teeth hurt.

Body lotion - Vaseline Cocoa radiance. I bring some in my carry on but purchase a full size once in India.

Foot lotion - I use the BodyShop peppermint foot lotion, and a full carry on size amount is usually enough for a month. I've been using this for over 20 years!

Face stuff - For this I pack two sets, One mini for carry on and one full size'ish for my checked bag (which is mostly empty and ready for shopping). I bring my toner, exfoliating face wash, face lotion, face oil, eye cream...all the basics that I use every day. You can get great products in India! But my face is acne prone and also in my 40's so I like to stick to what I know and have everything I need on hand. Some specific things I use are available in India but like my toothpaste, it's triple the price.

Make-up - In general I don't wear much makeup, only for events, but I do take it with me just in case. I usually opt for mini sizes as much as I can. Blush, highlighter and

eyebrows I don't go without. For lashes, I have not been blessed in that department, so I DIY my lash extensions biweekly. It's just one less thing I have to worry about when getting ready. I also bring my Maybeline 24hr skin tint! It's light and set's right away, doesn't smudge and it's like your own skin but better, contains Vitamin C and works well in the heat. A mini eye shadow and mascara for the bottom lashes as well as an eyeliner. And don't forget your makeup brushes/Sponge. If your're A Sephora Girly, they do have Sephora in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and some other cities with a total of 26 stores across India.

PRO TIP: If you don't know how much product you'll need and worried you'll run out, I'd suggest doing a trial run with your products. Example: I'm going to be in India for a month, so I'll fill my travel sized containers a month or more before and use just that to see if it will last me the entire duration of my trip. Don't forget to fill them again before your trip!

Hair color and developer - Between the grey and the blonde (if there's any left) I need a touch up every 10 days or so. In the past I've brought my own but on our next trip, I plan to order a couple colors on Amazon India and make my custom color. I'll only need to bring an applicator brush for precision application.

Hair towel - This is not really needed but I am picky with my hair towel, like mine on the thinner side and because I color my roots during my trip I don't want to get excess hair color all over the hotel/homes-stays towels.

Q-tips & Cotton rounds - I use these for my ears, make up and to apply my toner.

Flossers - After I took my dental assisting course in 2010, I have a heightened sensitivity to what is between my teeth after eating. I use these to floss after EVERYTHING I eat.

Bar soap - I use plain dove on my face and Olay for body, both can be taken in carry-on as they're not liquids. Dove can be purchased in India as well. I just take them for my convenience. Nothing like that first shower after a 15 hour long haul flight!

Perfume - I LOVE me a good scent! And can't leave the house without my signature Vanilla/woody/spice perfume. Apparently Mosquito's don't like this smell so win win! I don't bring my full bottle, just use the refillable mini's and bring my two fav's. I always double Ziploc bag them in case of spillage.

Exfoliation! - I always bring my exfoliating gloves and my pumice stone for my feet. After sweating all day in the heat and walking forever with the dust and dirt, these are a nice treat for your feet and skin.

Razor and an extra blade! - If you wax, I can't be of any help there, but there are tons of salons in India that can accommodate with this and they are more than affordable.

Sunscreen - I don't use sunscreen, yes yes I know... But I like to tan and I don't burn so. You should bring some from home, the quality is probably better and doesn't have skin lightening ingredients (some do in India).

Measuring Tape - I’m not talking the carpenters tape but a soft tailors tape. I bring this for when I’m in the markets in case I see something I like and need.

Feminine products - I almost forgot to add these because I don't require them but you'll want to also bring these from home. Not easy to find, the quality is different, and I think tampons are hard to find if at all.

UPDATE* Nail stuff - Okay, So I've decided to add some nail things here since just recently I have removed my Acrylics and gone Au Natural! I was doing them myself cause yes, you guessed it, I'm picky! But grew tired of doing them and was starting to struggle with typing and buttons. I have been using Nail Envy polish and Nail Envy - Repair Mode. The Repair mode is a liquid that dries pretty much right away and the Nail Envy Polish is dry in no time (7 min). I pair it with the OPI Cuticle Oil which is imperative for nail growth. Kinda off Topic but things things have worked a MIRACLE on my natural nails and finally I can grow them out without pain. These 3 items plus a Nail file is what I'll be bringing on our next trip.

Re: 2024 Update: Did my acrylics lol they lasted the month. Brought some extra supplies in case one maybe broke but didn't need it.

PRO TIP: Be prepared with your toiletries! Especially if you're taking only a carry on.

Those cute little clear bags that claim to be TSA approved are NOT really TSA approved. I had a clear bag of my own that I previously used on a trip to India and I had no issues. But the next time I took that bag, I had a power-tripping CATSA (Canada's TSA) agent who made me dump all my liquids and fit them into their dedicated bag which is a lot smaller in terms of width, also not completely clear, just saying... I had to leave behind only 3 items (not just liquids in my bag). But your toiletries will be confiscated if you cant fit them in their bag. I like to keep a few of their bags with me to reuse for my trips. I am picky with my products, especially my skincare and some products are not cheap or attainable in India. Don't take the chance!

My extremely over sized and unacceptable toiletries bag on the right, TSA bag on left.

THE INNER FEEL GOODS!

Digestive enzymes - Progressive digest well or Webber Naturals, I take these daily with meals no matter where I am.

Pro/probiotic fiber - Gutsmart powder by Lorna Vanderhaeghe, I take this daily as well.

Pepto bismal - I like the chewables (best for travel) and always have these on hand regardless. Also bring Tums if you get heartburn! You might want to try Charcoal Tablets as well, some swear by these to keep from getting sick and help while sick.

Antibiotics - Prescription from my doctor for Delhi belly just in case but these can also be purchased in India easily without a prescription. Please check with your Dr. first.

Rehydration tablets - Orange HYDRAlyte. I never needed this for dehydration in general but I did use them when I had Delhi belly to replenish my electrolytes which helped. Something similar is available in India but those are salty/sweet and I don't like the taste.

Migraine meds - I NEVER leave home without these. I haven't ever asked for them (Sumatriptan what I use) in India before but I know they have them so I will try on the next trip and update this! 2024 Update: Happy to report they do have it in India. It's called Suminat and it's actually way better than our generic stuff. Way less side affects and works faster.

Pain meds - Again, available in India as per your choice, I prefer Advil. I also Bring Excedrine which I mix with my Migraine tabs. It keeps me from getting drowsy and accelerates the time it takes to get rid of my migraine. 2024 Update: Did not need the excedrine, their Migraines meds are much better.

Allergy meds - Also available in India (much cheaper there) I use Cetirizine (Reactine). 2024 Update: I did not use allergy pills but ended up getting a nasal spray called Fluticasone. It is India's "flonase"

Medical kit - What I mean is a plastic baggy with some mini alcohol wipes, fabric band-aids and some mini antibiotic gel packs, mostly for heel blisters! You can get everything in India too!

ON THE OUTSIDE!

Pajamas - I forgot these on my first trip lol what a dilemma! But you can buy some in India. Zudio in India has really cute cotton ones!

Sports bra's - To wear under my jams in case I need to welcome room service etc.

Strapless bra - and my regular ones of course! To avoid bra straps showing with certain outfits. I forget this on my last trip and struggled with my halter style dress.

Flip flops - a pair of basic rubber flip flops that can be used for showers

Socks - I bring a comfy warm pair for the plane (your feet will get cold) and some light ankle/no show socks for my sneakers while roaming around.

Clothing & footwear - You can read more about this in my "What to wear in India" page but in general I bring loose breathable clothing and leave room for shopping as well. Just make sure you bring some basic outfits to get you through so you're not forced to buy just to get on with your day. For shoes, get what's comfortable for YOU. I bring 2 pairs of sneakers black/white, a pair of platform sandals and some flat ones. These Foamy ones are like walking on a cloud, I can wear them all day without getting tired, They are SUPER comfy > Sandals

Sunglasses - I don't buy expensive ones in general and wouldn't advise this for your India trip. I bring only one pair, and if I want more, there are TONS of sunglasses for purchase in India.

Hat or baseball cap - I bring a straw type one but this is your preference, it's nice to have to shield your face from the hot sun during spring and summer. It's also cute for Pictures!

Light cotton scarf - I like to bring at least one basic one to get me started before shopping for more. I bring a neutral color or one that goes with everything.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS

Luggage locks and cables - To keep my luggage secure on trains mainly. Yes there is a debate on luggage locks and that they can be opened easily while going through the airport but I think it might act as a deterrent. Paired with some zip ties and a luggage cover, it all makes it too much work for someone to break in since they have to do it in such a small amount of time. And please Do NOT put valuables in your checked baggage! Use a small carry on on personal item for that.

Zip Ties - I use them for the zippers on my luggage (as well as locks) and for the clip of my fanny packs so no one can unclip and run. It most likely will not happen but it's an extra safety measure that might give you piece of mind.

Laundry soap - I prefer to wash my unmentionables in my room, You can use the travel packs of powder if you have carry on only, or a few pods in a doubled sealed container in your checked baggage. This is where you may need that infamous sink plug (haha) or you can shove a plastic bag in the hole. Otherwise you can get them washed with a laundry service, almost every place has this option just ask.

Re-usable plastic bags - I bring some plastic Shein zip bags with me. It keeps my shoes from dirtying up my clothes inside my suitcase. I also bring them in my big carry all bag when I go to temples so I can slip my shoes into the plastic bag and into my straw carry bag only if there is no dedicated shoes person there. Your shoes are perfectly safe when checked or when someone is watching them for you, just be sure to give them a small tip! Having my shoes stolen hasn't happened to me but my husband lost his shoes in a temple here in Canada! Apparently there is some kind of shoe thief that frequents that particular temple.

Mini sewing kit - There are tailors galore in India! But for a quick last min button or stitch, I like to have this and quickly do it myself.

Mini jewelry case - This will keep your jewelry organized and prevent your necklaces from getting all knotted up, Using a straw and tape will also work.

Mosquito repellent - To Deet or not to Deet! I personally have no preference on this, and only needed it once while in a restaurant at night in Jodhpur. The manager gave me some to use, and lit a coil for me as well... Like I said in my "Do's and Don'ts" page, Don't be shy to ask :) If you are travelling around at night on foot or train etc or if you are going during monsoon I would advise to have some on hand. The more moisture the more Mosquito's! You don't want to catch the dreaded Dengue fever. Lately Iv'e been looking into Picaridin but they have the good stuff in India and that's probably better for India's super mosquito's

Sanitizing wipes - I bring a pack in my carry on. I generally use them to wipe down the plane trays etc and also my hotels/home-stay phones, remotes, and for train trips.

Paper hand soap - I absolutely love these! They are sheets of paper made from soap and they fit in my small cross body bags. There are an abundance of washing sinks for you to use around India but a lot of them lack soap. Get these on Amazon.

Mini Hand lotion - Like my Chapsticks, I have these everywhere as well. I need that lotion after a wash and you'll be doing a lot of hand washing while in India.

Mini Hand sanitizer - My favorite is Warm Vanilla Sugar" from Bath&Body works. It's not drying like the others and has some moisture beads inside.

Dental Flossers - Since taking my Dental Assisting course back in 2010, I am hyper aware of what is, and could be stuck and festering in between my teeth. I use Pick flossers after each meal or even snacks if I can feel anything in there, plus no one wants to walk around with some leftover Pakora in there teeth do they?

Kleenex - Tissue to go packs. For when you need to use the washroom in public toilets. There's always running water to clean with but if you're not comfortable with the drip dry then bring some tissues. I brought 2 double packs with me for 3 weeks and had plenty of it left over. No need to bring toilet paper, it does exist in India.

Mini umbrella - depending on season, you can also use it to shield you from the sun. Alternatively you can purchase a cute and colorful Indian parasol to shield you from the sun. Doubles as a nice souvenir!

A good book - I bring one on the plane as a break from my music and movies. There is also an amazing selection in India! If you're a bookworm, you'll love visiting the book stores in India.

A journal for notes and planning - This keeps my brain organized! I use this for day planning, to add up my shopping for customs purposes when coming back to Canada, for dinner reservations I make ahead of time and just for general notes. Yes I realize I can use my phone for this too, but I prefer pen on paper.

Bring PENS! - They were a bit difficult to come by, so the next time I went, I brought 3 different pens, one in my backpack, one in my make up bag and one in my purse.

Earplugs - For all sorts of noise. I didn't need mine but India is noisy and I know others have needed them. Also handy on overnight sleeper trains when people can snore.

Reusable water bottle - For convenience and to help keep India clean. I have a dedicated water bottle at home with a wide mouth opening. The small plastic bottle openings are not great for chugging back water and just don't cut it for me.

ELECTRONICS

Phone and charger - No explanations needed here!

Laptop and charger - My morning consists of laptop and coffee! Also to download photos from my camera, buying online monument tickets, general research and working on this blog now :)

Power bank - I did bring one but never needed it. I charge all my electronics while I sleep but It's good to have during the scheduled power outages even though they don't last too long. This will depend on your battery and usage.

Mini speaker - Nice to have some music but be considerate of the time and volume.

Camera and charger - Most newer phones take great pictures but I still like to use my camera too.

Wireless earbuds - Who wants wires! I use my earbuds on the plane while watching movies, listening to music and also on the trains for the same. If you're into audio tours while in India you will need them for this as well.

Basic plug converters - (D & C plugs) - Different from the hair appliance one, I bring a few of these, and don't forget the surge protect!

FOR THE PLANE AND LANDING!

MEDICATIONS - Bring any medications that you need in your personal Item or Carry on!

Neck pillow - I can usually get about 5 -6 hours of straight sleep on a plane, plus a couple naps, but the neck pillow is a must for me! I use the memory foam type.

Travel blanket - Plane blankets that are possibly used and not cleaned, uh no thanks! I bring my own which is incredibly compact. Got this at Winners as well as the neck pillow.

Laptop, Phone, and earbuds - I usually download some Indian movies from Netflix and Prime (2-3 hrs long) which makes the time on the plane pass faster. If you Download them you can watch offline. I'll talk more about Indian movies and series that are a must watch in a new blog.

Blow up foot pillow - I have bad circulation in my legs so this is something new we will try out on our next trip, will report back on this! My advice is to fully inflate this and wait a week to make sure they don't have any leaks, you can exchange if it does.

Compression socks - Another new one to me that I'll be trying out next time.

Gum - I just like to have gum on hand. Aids in digestion.

Toothbrush and mini paste - after sleeping and just to freshen up before landing.

Passports - Need I say more?

India Tourist Visa - You can't get on your flight without this, or into India!

Credit and debit cards - You'll need these for obvious reasons!

Drivers license - I like to use this for ID and just keep a photocopy of my passport if I'm ever asked.

Photocopies of my documents - Passport, drivers licence and visa.

Passport or visa size photo - For my India Pre-paid SIM.

My vaccine records (COVID only) - This is not mandatory anymore, but things can change and I like to be prepared.

Plane snackie snacks! - Because I'm strictly gluten free, I need to be careful what I'm eating on the plane. I looked into the Air India Gluten - free meal but I found very dodgy reviews. People getting terrible food, a Veg meal, or not getting one at all. I do prefer a non-veg meal on my long 15Hr journey since I wont have many filling carbs. My body seems to process veg meals quickly leaving me hungry faster. So without taking chances, I'll stick to the regular non- veg meal that comes with Naan or Roti that is separated in a foil packet anyway. You can check on the Air India website to see what meal you will be offered that day.

Fruits - You can bring pretty much anything. If it's cut up make sure its in a clear container, either bottom or top. I'll be bringing cut up Honey dew, kiwi, and cantaloupe, and a couple greener Banana's (peel on) Low FODmap fruits while my body still heals from the Gluten. I suggest putting down a paper towel under the fruits like these so water doesn't collect in the bottom of the container or it will be considered a liquid.

Note: Peanut butter, yogurt, dips and spreads are all considered liquids and will need to fit into your TSA/CATSA liquids baggie unfortunately. If you incorporate these spreads or sauces within the food (making a wrap or sandwich) and prep before your flight, they are allowed.

Meats and cheese - You can make a mini charcuterie board! Why not!? Have a glass of wine even! But not too many or you'll dehydrate yourself. Keep in mind that any cheeses you bring must be hard cheeses and please don't bring stinky ones that disturb other passengers. I'm talking to you Blue cheese! If you don't want to go all out, you can opt for some pepperoni sticks. I don't eat pork so I'd opt for Turkey or Chicken, but if you go for beef, please don't mention what it is on the flight. Some passengers won't appreciate this. Best to avoid if possible.

Chips and Munchies - I will be bringing a large bag of Doritos, Off the Eaten Path - chips which are SO GOOD! (available at Walmart), Made Good - cheese star crackers, Made Good - Breakfast Bars, InnoFoods - Keto Granola (COSTCO), Some Brazil nuts (My personal fav) and some Gluten free protein bars (I like Builders chocolate peanut butter). You can also bring some pre-popped popcorn.

2024 Update: We flew on Air India and there was really no need for anything extra We munched on some chips but other we were completely full the entire flight. They were still nice to have in case.

I have a great extended medical plan through work so I don’t get insurance but this is really recommended for travel any where you go.

I also don’t get any specific vaccinations before going but this is your personal preference. Requirements vary by country but for Canada there is nothing extra that is mandatory as far as I know. I have my Covid Vaccine card with me when I travel.

If you’re bitten by a dog in some rare case, and haven't updated your tetanus shot (every 10 years), it is available in India.

I genuinely believe in India's hospitals and healthcare system, having experienced firsthand the exceptional quality of care they provide. While the pay up front approach may be different, the top-notch medical services you receive are well worth it, especially considering the nominal expenses compared to services back home. It's essential to conduct thorough research and opt for reputable hospitals when seeking medical attention in India. Unfortunately not all government hospitals offer the same level of care, as they tend to be overcrowded and chaotic. Having experienced healthcare in Canada, I can confidently say that I would choose India's healthcare system every time without hesitation, given the cost, quality of care, and services provided.

Remember, everyone is different! We all have our own set of likes, dislikes, and needs. These are non-negotiable for me, and if they matter to you, there's no need to feel guilty about prioritizing them. Just because you're traveling to India doesn't mean you have to give up your essentials and adopt a full-on hippie lifestyle. That approach may suit some but not all.

I recently came across a comment online, criticizing the use of blow dryers and hair tools while on vacation while in India, hinting that it's better to immerse yourself in the sights than fuss over your hair. Not only was this comment rude and condescending, but it also displayed an air of judgment. Honestly, it only takes me about 15 minutes to style my hair, so I don't see how it would hinder my exploration but even if it takes you an hour and makes you feel good, who cares! Do you girl!

We all have different routines, and taking care of oneself doesn't mean one can't enjoy the beauty of a new place. It's all about balance and accommodating our individual needs and preferences.

So, remember, stay fabulous, stay true to yourself, and never let anyone dim your sparkle, not even on the chaotic roads of India!
